"Oh, M-M-M-Moooooocha! Come here, my sweetest precious pie!"Mocha winced as Sandy's sing-song voice whistled through the air. Why wouldn't that stupid human just be more like her neice and give Mocha some time to herself? "Sweety-fuzzy-wuzzy-pie! Where aaaaaaare you?" With a sigh, Mocha decide that she couldn't ignore the voice any more. She leapt down off the windowsill and recluctantly padded over to the room Sandy was in. The human gave a delighted squel and scooped up Mocha. "There's my little sugar-lips!" Katrina, Sandy's neice, wandered past the room. Two seconds after she was out of sight across the dorrway, she backtracked and stepped into the room. "Aunt Sandy, I don't think Mocha likes that." She gave Mocha a half-smile and rolled her eyes slightly at her aunt. Sandy gave a merry laugh, bouncing Mocha like a baby. "Nonsense, look at her! She's loving it!" Mocha let out a restrained growl. "See, she's even purring now!' Katrina quickly launched into her speil about cats not just purring when the're happy. "Aunt Sandy, I'm sure she's-" "Oh, honey-it's past suppertime!" Sandy looked up abruptly. She obviously hadn't heard a word Katrina said. "Come now, let's get everyone dinner!" She set-no, more like dumped-Mocha on the ground and began to lead the way to the kitchen. Katrina reched down and smoothed Mocha's ruffled fur. "Sorry about that," she muttered, soft enough to escape Sandy's ears. "You know how she gets. Come on, we better get some food." Mocha purred as she twsted herself between Katrina's walking feet. Thank goodness for Katrina-if she wasn't here, Mocha would run away for sure and probably wind up dead. She couldn't hunt and she couldn't fight-she wouldn't last a week outside the house. Sandy was almost worse than all that, though. Katrina, on the other hand, Mocha absolutley loved. With a conflicted sigh, Mocha slowed her pawsteps to a stop just outside the kitchen where she was supposed to wait for her food.

"Alrighty, Mocha, here you go. Just try not to get stuck again, okay?" Katrina smiled fondly down at Mocha as she led the way into the backyard. Mocha stepped through the open door gratefully-ever since she had gotten too high up in a tree, Sandy had confined her inside the house. Now Sandy was gone for the afternoon, and Katrina, who understood Mocha more than Sandy ever would, was letting her go outside. With a thankful meow to Katrina, Mocha sped off into the yard.
Mocha had been making plans for what to do when she finally got outside-she'd finished them ages ago, in fact. There were so many things she could do if she just had the oppurtunity... which she was given today. But by the time she got outside, all the cat could find the energy to do was sit on the fence staring out into the distance.
What was it like out there? To be completely free, to run where she wished and to live day by day on her own wits and skill? To not "belong" to a human who thought she was a porcelain rag doll?
Mocha quickly shook the thoughts from her mind. She could never live away from the house. She couldn't even catch her own food, let alone defend herself. And then there was Katrina to think about-if the thought of leaving gave Mocha separation anxiety, how might her disappearance strain the girl? Sandy she could hardly care less about-come to think of it, just this morning Sandy had come up with a new name for her ("Come here and have bweakfast, my sweety-tweety birdy-wirdy honey-bun"), but Katrina was kind and cared about Mocha. She tried to keep her aunt from completely humiliating the she-cat, and she did her best to make her comfortable.
Still deep in her thoughts, Mocha didn't notice the pawsteps until they were nearly upon her.

A snow-white tom padded out of a two-leg nest, and saw the she-cat. Then, he jumped ontop of the fence. He made a low chuckle.

bic: "Look Snowkit, my name's Snowball. Don't rub it in or you'll get a little present form, and it isn't gonna be nice." Snowball lifted his paw from off the ground and sleathed (or unsleathed... I'm not really sure) his claws.

Mocha bristled as the cat came past, taunting her. Her claws whipped out and she leaped from the fence. "Never imitate that stupid, wretched human!" The fury in her voice surprised her, though it shouldn't have. Well, she was angry! "You think I choose how she speaks? You think I like it when she humiliates me? Well, think again!" Breathing hard, brown fur bristling in agitation, Mocha was about to attack when another cat came along. As the two conversed Mocha hung back, silent, watching and waiting A puzzled look entered her eyes when the subject of "Clans" came about, but it was skimmed over quickly. The original cat-Snowkit-seemed much friendlier now-come to think of it, they both did-but Mocha wasn't quite ready to forgive her for the "sweety-pie" jibe. Padding over quietly, she sat near the two cats. "Matter of fact, same here," she replied to Snowkit's words, though ignoring the she-cat herself. "Sandy doesn't let me out much, the idiot human." The small cat paused for a minute before going on. Still speaking to Snowball, she said, "Er... I'm sorry to press, but... what is a 'Clan'? It sounds like some sort of big... some sort of... group type of thing, but... I usually get stuff like that wrong." To her utter annoyance the garbled words wouldn't come out right. "Sorry. I'm not used to talking to other cats..." She ran a paw over her ear self-consciously before sitting back to wait for a reply.

snowkit turned to see the origanal cat."what did they name you"she asked in a much nicer tone"sorry most kittypets are stupid and honesly some started purring when i say stuff like that, soo i began to think kittypets were stupid'." kittypets are werid here but it's kinda nice" snowkit watched the 2 thoughtfuly"you ever hunt or fight?"
with that snowkit set down and began to lick her fur. sighing she got out some dried blood

Mocha turned reluctantly to Snowkit, deciding to hear her out. The explaination was-mostly-satisfactory, and she decided to speak to the she-cat. "My name is Mocha." Seeing the cat's confused expression, she said, "For my fur. Mocha is a brown drink humans like. Snowkit is for your fur, I presume? But... You're not a kit." Confused, Mocha cocked her head at the cat. There were, in fact, several confusing things about this conversation. "Kittypets? Eh... housecats, you mean? I can't believe some cats like that..." A convulsive shudder ran through her, and Mocha had to shake herself before going on. "They're idiots. I hate Sandy... Katrina's nice, thoguh. None of that baby talk from her. She understands how I feel about it-kind of hard not to, when you live with Sandy." She sighed. "Even Katrina has to put up with it." "That's actually what I was thinking about when you came along. I've never been taught to do either... I can defend myself again some cats and hunt a few of the stupider mice, but that's it." Worried that Snowkit would revert back to her earlier taunting now, Mocha shied back a bit.

snowkit seemed to understand,"hi mocha, i personally tend to stay away from humans.and i guess its not your fault. i an teach you to hunt and fight if you like,""at least the humans left you some brain. and what do you mean 'kit' snowkit is what my mom named me and i don't let any one make fun of it." she started to tense back up and her voie lost a bit of friendlyness at the last part.

Mocha nodded her ascent. "I'd stay away from Sandy if I could-believe me, I do try." She sighed. "You're lucky, not having to deal with humans or the junk they feed us cats." She shuddered at the very thought of the crisp pellets she was given, which were flavored decently enough but crunched horrible and caught in her throat. "I'd love to learn, if you're willing!" Mocha's heart pounded with excitement at the very thought. "I've never had the opportunity before... Thank you." The brown she-cat's eyes glowed with pleasure until Snowkit's tone took an unexpected twist. "I'm sorry-I wasn't trying to make fun of you. It's just..." Mocha's eyes clouded as her memory flew backward. "I never met my father, but Mom told me about him. His family had a naming system... Cats had a first part of their name all throughout their lives-mine would be Mocha, for instance, you two's Snow. There were second parts that changed-until they're six months, everyone's second part was "kit". Because they were kittens. Then they became "paw"... I think... until they were full-fledged cats with a second name that best suited them. He was a wild cat, like you, so I thought the naming would... I just... oh, never mind. Sorry!" More confused than ever, Mocha decided to just close her mouth before she offended Snowkit again.

"It's all right," Mocha said. "Be glad you have that privilege at all. I never really knew my family that well-I was sold to Sandy before I was old enough to get to know them enough to remember them clearly." Her sister's name and coat, her mother's scent and voice-that was all that was left, really. The topic of her training lightened Mocha's mood considerably. "Great, thanks! We can start now if you want." She glanced upward. "I have to be home before the sunset, though, or Sandy will give Katrina no end of grief, rampage the neighborhood looking for me, and never let me out again." She gave Snowkit a rueful smile. "I got stuck in a tree and she kept me inside for weeks. Sandy's actually not here right now, it was Katrina who let me out. Soooo... when do you want to start?"

"now would be fine. want to come snowball?" with that snowkit headed into the woods just a little ways flicking her tail for them to follow. "now sniff around do you smell any thing?"

With a backward glance at Snowball to see if he was coming, Mocha obediently padded behind Snowkit to a woody area not far off. She gave a deep but noiseless sniff to see what had been through lately. "I... I smell a few cats-they smell odd-but they came by a few days ago, judging by how stale the scent is. There's a mouse near that tree, I can hear it, too... a wood thrush, I think... and a jay above us." She looked back at Snowkit to see how she'd done.

snowkit was impressed. she was obusly not completly new to trying to scent stuff"very well. i think we should start with the mouse. now check the wind so that you will be down wind of it. can you tell me why?"

Mocha allowed herself to glow for a moment at Snowkit's impressed expression before getting back to business. She lifted her tail, using it as a wind vane, and got downwind of the mouse. What else had Snowkit asked...? Oh, right! "I need to be downwind because otherwise, it will smell me before anything else." She was taking a quess here, but it seemed to be the most logical explaination she could come up with.
