Soft white paws plunged into the ice as the swish of fur upon blood rang in my ears. I could tell that tonight was not a night to cherish, much less remember.
My sorrow is my name, and it changes with the breeze. But after that night, my name would always remain the same. There is no Rakuen in my life, no Paradise to head for when my life is dead. So for now, I am Sorrow, Pain, and Death.
I could hear the soft swish of fur crunchingas muscles shifted beneath a frozen pelt, and I knew someone was following. Oh, if I had never turned around, I would have never had to worry about my life ever again.
But I did look around, and the huge white wolf stopped in his tracks, his eyes fixed on me as he radiated cold hatred down on me. I stood my ground and planted my paws in the ice. If I had never done that, if I had fled, then I might have lived.
But I did stand my ground. I planted my paws and decided not to move an inch. The huge wolf snapped his jaws and growled, "Nathora, you should have just kept running. But you stopped, and it cost Rohu it's life." He glared at me with his mismatched eyes. "You're the last one."
Fear gripped me like an icy claw, and I tried to move. But the giant wolf lunged at me, and the snow around me turned red. That night changed my life forever.

So there I was, standing in the center of the snowy hills, my hindpaws dragging through the snow as my left foreleg bled rapidly. A trail of red lead for miles back to the bloody scene, where I'm sure that big brute was retelling his ovelryexaggerated story of how he'd nearly killed me but left me with two good front legs so i could escape in agony.
I collapsed for what felt like the hundredth time, and tried to groom my bloody leg. I winced and let out a mournful howl that resounded through the empty hillside. I blinked down at my bloody leg: half of the paw was half torn off, hanging onto my snapped foreleg by several tendons. The sight was enough t omake a pup barf and an elder have a heart attack, so I looked away. I saw the dancing northern lights, with the distant shadows of leaping and dancing wolves throwing snowy figures into the lights.
My heart raced. What if it was my pack, finally stopping to celebrate their near escape of the Ice Talons? What if it was the pack of my mother, the Starry Rain, dancing excitedly because the lights had told the Reader that a princess was returning home? I hauled myself onto a stiff foreleg and two twisted hindpaws and managed to drag myself foreward several yards, howling excitedly as I went.
I managed to haul myself up to the top of the hill, and I was awed at what I saw beneath me. A giant pack of wolves, all a twilight color, were slowly climbing into the sky, their tails and heads lowered with awed respect. I plunged down the hill as quickly as I could, to join them on their starward journey to Rakuen. As soon as my yapping came into their ears, the lights disappeared, and all the wolves with a hint of rainbow light on their fur disappeared. Two wolves were left in silver darkness beneat the full moon.
I hobbled over to the newest two, young adults around my age, just recently accepted as adults of the pack. I sniffed the brujo and femme up and down, and they didn't resist or draw away until I murmured, "Where did they all go?"
The silver and white brujo let out a mournful sob. "Their journey to Rakuen was interupted by an intruder. Only the ones that had already begun the journey would reach Rakuen. The others were condemmed to await the next Aroura. That can take minutes, or years, depending on the leaders of Rakuen."
The femme nodded her head slowly. "Tambun is right. Only the high elders will greet the leaders of Rakuen. The young adults of the Starry Rain were allowed to follow along, but very few of them will get to see Lupis before they must await, lingering between Paradise and Hell."
I gasped, my numb legs suddenly feeling hot. "You're part of the Starry Rain pack?" They nodded, as confused as I was. I shook my head. "Then I am no intruder. My mother was Cassandra, high eldess of the Starry Rain pack." The young wolves exchanged looks of surprise and fear.
The femme stretched her head forward to touch nose to nose with me for a brief moment. "Was your father Claudandus, the betrayer, he who should and must be sealed?" I nodded sadly. "Yes, the Betrayer." The two exchanged looks again.
The brute, Tambun, touched his nose to my shoulder gently. "Then we are all related under our fathers. Your father was the leader of a band of hundreds, known as the Ice Talons. Our father's were in his band. My father, Rashuen, named as the Paradice Bringer, was medium status in the pack. He was a mercenary assassin for Claudandus."
The fae tilted her head. "And my father, Candambus, was low in the line, but the quickest. He was known as the Living Shadow, the King of Death. He could kill an enemy with a breath of poison and a blind eye."
I sat down on twisted hindpaws and breathed a sigh. We were blood shed kin. My eyes fluttered to Tambun, and I found my eyes searching through his pelt. Muscular, long and soft fur, strong blunt paws, quick legs, and fierce eyes. His pups, I found myself thinking, would be fighters.
I blinked and an image of racing through a forest with a silver and white brujo pup and a silver femmice pup on my heels filled my mind. My head twisted to the femme as I whispered, "Solitaire?" Her ears pricked up and she whispered, "Nathora?" I leaped to my paws and we began rubbing heads, lost in violent memories of death and fun.
I turned my head away and sighed. "Salem and Sandra died because we refused to join our fathers," i whispered sadly. Solitaire nodded slowly, then her eyes lit up. "You know what, now that the elders are gone to Rakuen for a year, we need to find where the Aurora will leap up next." Her eyes shone with passion. "You can come with us!" I nodded violently, and the next thing I knew they were pouring over my paw with licks and telling me plans for what we would do.
